In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Representation of the artist

The artist is represented through the final piece of my music magazine and digi pack. The image used in the Digi pack is most important but equally as important as the image that is selected on the magazine advert. The image effect that was selected was black and white which links the digi pack to the music video as it follows the same style. The links between digi pack and music magazine are shown by many in the indie music genre. For example Kings of Leon on their album Come around Sundown used the sepia effect when creating the digi pack as well as in the music video and music magazine advert.

Mise-en-scene of images

Again using the image shown above of the band.

The mise en scene of images is continual throughout all my media construction. My music video links to the band and not just the locations. The link between digi pack and music video which is a main convention is gained through the band themselves. The theme and location is continual through my constructions and this is a convention of music video production.

Costumes and props

The costume and props used in the digi pack and music video are very stereotypical towards my target audience which is part of the indie rock genre. The parka coat and Harrington jacket are items of clothing that are shown in today’s music production such as ‘Liam Gallagher’ has his own clothing range that he targets to the same audience as my music video in his own music videos with ‘Beady Eye’ as well as when he was a part of the iconic Indie Rock band Oasis. Costume is a main part of how we set the genre of the music video as well as using props such as the electric guitar and drums which are a massive part of the indie rock genre in today’s music.
Use of font and style

The font and style have been used to challenge media conventions and to create links between all my constructions. The font above is used on both my digi pack but also the music magazine advert to create links for the audience. In those I have used the same font in order to create a house style between all my products and therefore allowing the audience to associate them all with each other. This is shown in modern music advertisements, music videos and digi packs such as ‘Kings of Leon’ come around sundown advert in NME and the digi pack used the same font and style. This technique is used when artists release new albums so that their target audience can see the links between the different products.
Written content
The written content in both the music advertisement and digi pack challenge and subvert real conventions in many ways. On my music magazine advert I have the Artist name, Album name as well as the record label. These are all main conventions that must be included into an advert in order to attract the target audience and create a successful marketing campaign. The written content on my digi pack includes track listing which is a main convention for the digi pack. The record label and copyrighted information are also included which gives links to all the products as they all have this included on them. By comparing to current digi packs you can see that by following the structure and conventions of albums such as ‘the smiths’ I was able to construct my own in the same way.
Music genre and how your advert suggests it
The music genre of my music magazine advert is suggested through many different conventions. The magazine advert I produced was in the style of one that would be produced for music magazine NME. On my magazine I have also included a review that is done in the style of NME magazine and this is because NME are well known to concentrate their efforts and attention of the indie/indie rock genre as well as the alternative genre. So by including this on my magazine this allows my target audience to associate NME and its background with the artist I am advertising.
Music genre and how your digipack suggests it

The music genre is suggested through a mixture of conventions. On the back cover I have included the record label which is island records. The London based side of this label is called Moshi Moshi Records and they have links to other bands that ‘The Drums’ have been likened to; for example ‘Hot Chip’ and ‘Bloc Party’. These bands also have links with NME and this will definitely interest my audience and attract them to my artist. Another way in which my digi pack suggests the genre is through costume and through models. The model used on the Front cover of my digi pack has slight stubble, skinny jeans and a collared shirt. This costume is part of the stereotype of an indie music fan and therefore when the audience see this they will instantly associate that with that music genre.
Layout
The layout for my advert is very clear and distinct. The artist and and title are the main titles of the page and the largest part of the page. This is so that the text allows the audience to be drawn in and leaves them knowing what it is about and why they should read on. One of the main conventions for the music advert to be successful is for the band name, release date and ways in which it can be bought to be able to be seen easily and leave them in no doubt when it can be bought. The main image keeps the page simple but also attracts the audience towards the product.
Special effects
The special effects i used in construction of the digi pack have continued on through the music magazine advertisement and the music video. This creates a house style and when viewed allows the audience to be able to create links between all the products. The effects that I have used are black and white and/or grey scale.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

In my music video, digi pack and music magazine I have continued the house style and conventions to create a brand identity. The themes that I picked up on and used were the links between images on the digi pack and with the music video. The colour scheme and special effects create links, which also follows conventions by creating this theme that is prevalent in all my products. As an example of the same technique that i used, is ‘Kings of Leon’ and their come around sundown album where they have an obvious link with not only the three projects but also a link between the title, ‘sundown’ which links in with the effect used in the music video of the sun and the haze that is used in the video.  This created a brand identity for them and this is the same technique that I tried to use with my media productions.

In my products for ‘The Drums’ I used a theme of an older style and I did this by using a black and white effects. I used this effect throughout my products and this colour scheme makes my band and brand more noticeable and creates a link through all three products. By making this link I allow the audience to know what the other products are like just by viewing one of the products.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages
Evaluation Question 3

Also used in research, planning, construction and evaluation was other equipment such as:

Camera

The camera was used to take stills for the music video as well as for the two ancillary tasks. The battery life was low but took a clear, crisp image.

Flip HD

The flip HD was used to record all the footage for the music video. It was used in the construction stage because of the great footage it could produce.

Memory Pen

The memory pen was used to transfer data and work from home to sixth form and back again. Without this tech I would never of been able to finish my products.

Laptop/Computer

The laptop was used in all stages. Mainly in construction when accompanied with Photoshop I created my magazine advert.

Ipad 2

The Ipad was used in the research and planning section of my course. I used it much in the same way as the laptop to research the band and fan base.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The audience feedback is one of the most important stages in media production. Using the feedback I receive then know what I have done right and what I have done wrong. Knowing this allows me to do improvements and gain the highest grade possible.

In what ways does my video remind you of other music videos?

Samuel Gunn (Media Student - 17 years old) - " This video reminds me of other music videos such as many videos produced by the vaccines. A Video to be specific is 'Wetsuit' in which the band are portrayed using instagram which has a haze effect which I believe links in with the effect used in this music video of black and white."

Ryan Dodds (Friend - 18 years old) - " This music video does not really remind me of other music videos as it is very different to the the typical music that I like to listen to. I prefer dance genre of music but from viewing the video and listening to the music I believe they have gave a good representation of the lyrics through images which is part of goodwin's theory"

What do you think are the strengths of my music video?

Jamie Hall (University Media student - 19 years old)- "After watching the music video produced by the boys, I believe that the main strengths of the video are that the transitions and the storyline, which I can tell was planned thoroughly with storyboards and shot plans. It seems from a neutral point of view that a lot of time and effort has gone into this music video"

Miss Chapman-Jones (Media Teacher) - "The music video has many strengths for example; The lyrics of the song are represented into a narrative storyline and also indicated the genre through costume worn by artist. There is an obvious link throughout the media products and this has been done by using a specific colour palette and careful and successful planning of shots."
